We Will Overcome
A while back I had a dream of a grand scale invasion of an enemy army. At the time everyone was feeling pretty good and secure about life when the invasion hit. Most were not prepared and the enemy suddenly occupied OUR territory. It was mostly fear that crippled our men and women. In the dream, as long as a person obeyed (submitted to the invader’s whims and orders) they were allowed to go about their business. At any time, however, the enemy could ravage, destroy or do whatever to us because of the complacency of the invaded.
The battlefield was the USA. Our citizens were frightened and seemingly helpless. As I realized that fear was the enemy’s only real strength, I decided to take a stand and push back! After all, what did I have to lose? Finally, at one point as I was being harassed and tormented by one of their officers I had had enough. I clenched my right fist, turned and knocked him across the face with full force! He hit the ground hard, and when he finally got up he ran off like a whipped dog never to return.
The enemy higher command took note and from that point on watched me carefully. Some even attempted to befriend me to the point that they actually trusted me. I suddenly had the respect of my enemy and was able to do as I pleased. I continued to help as many of our people as I could but to little avail as they were fearful had no fight left in them. They believed that as long as they remained submitted to the invading forces that they could at least live an OK, yet captive life and not have any trouble. Infuriated, I located and commandeered a large “Indiana Jones” type truck to take things to the next level and rally stir up, and rescue the troops
We gained strength and our faith returned as we took action in submitting to God and resisting our enemy.
Important lesson: Once I bolstered my strength and resolve in the Lord, and I ran to the fight, my enemy was shaken and fear came into their camp. As a result, I prevailed.
Let’s muster the troops! Let’s circle the wagons and support each other, pray, fast, and be faithful in the small things. It seems as though the cares of this world; budgets, complaints, gossip, color of the church foyer, bills, TV, and gas prices, are consuming the thoughts and time of many and taking us off task. We must press in and know God intimately and equip the saints for the work of the ministry.
Remember complacency never won a thing! As we submit ourselves to God, (action) and resist the devil, (action) he will flee. Interestingly to resist in this passage of James 4:7 means to withstand, strive against, or oppose in some manner. Resistance can be a defensive maneuver on our part, such as resisting or withstanding the temptation to sin. Or, resistance can be an action we take to use an offensive weapon in the full armor of God as described in Ephesians 6:13-18… the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Using the Scriptures to expose Satan’s lies and temptations is the most effective way to strive against and defeat him.
Finish well,
Tom Davis
